The Bengal’s traditional Daker saaj – a unique and typical artwork to decorate Devi Durga’s in west bengal. It was in the year 1757 after the Battle of Plassy, Durga Puja was initiated. The decorations are made of almost anything that make the devi beautiful and look unique. But the special one is the Daker saaj silver foil which is imported from Germany to decorate the Ma Durga’s idol. As the foil is imported through post which means ‘dak’ and thus the decoration came to known as ‘Daker Saaj’.
Daker saaj is used in traditional pujas including the puja in Sovabazaar Rajbari, Seal bari to name a few. To celebrate the joy, a competition was held at my work place for Ma Durga saaj and hence a great time to indulge into something creative… 🙂
